10th Annual L. A. County Auto Tech Competition Official Sponsors
The Greater Los Angeles New Car Dealers Association and the Southland Motor Car Dealers association invite you to participate in our 10th Annual L. A. County Auto Tech Competition for High School Seniors at Cerritos College on Saturday, January 24th 2009. Deadline to apply is October 24th 2008.
The challenge of the Auto Tech Competition is to identify the finest two-person high school technician team in the Southland area. The competition is designed to encourage young talented individuals with an aptitude for technology to pursue a career at a retail automotive dealership.
Selection of your school team is simple – register and bring your best four students to the Phase I: Pre-Qualifying written exam to Cerritos College on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 9:00 am. This test consists of around 100 questions and is very similar to the ASE certification test. All students must be seniors under the age of 21 who are scheduled to graduate in June of 2009.
The two top scoring students will then represent your high school at the semifinals on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Cerritos College. Students competing in the Semifinals may intern at local dealership to help prepare for the competition.
One Los Angeles area high school team and one Southland area high school team will then have a chance to compete in the National Competition during the International New York Auto Show on April 14 & April 15, 2009. This year we have an outstanding support from local dealers and auto manufacturers who will be providing an array of awesome prizes, scholarship opportunities and gifts for all participants.
Participants as well as Winners of the New York Competition are also awarded scholarships from sponsoring companies. Remember there is no cost to enter this competition. Enclosed you will find the Teacher and Student reply forms. Please complete forms and FAX to (562) 988-1460 at your earliest! Deadline to sign-up for the competition is Friday, October 24, 2008.

What? Each school may enter up to four (4) students to take a written test. The two highest scoring students per school will be paired to determine the school score. The 10 (10) highest scoring schools will participate in the local competition. Once the finalists are determined, GLANCDA may match schools with sponsoring dealerships. If the students are matched, the sponsoring dealerships will provide mentoring for the student team, preparing them for the “hands on” competition. Where? The 2007-2008 Greater Los Angeles County Automotive Technology Competition will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Cerritos College at 9:00 AM. An awards luncheon will be held immediately following the competition. When? The entry deadline is Friday, October 24, 2008. The written test will be given on Saturday, November 1, 2008 no later than 9:00 am at Cerritos College. How? The entry process is simple – merely download and fill out the registration forms from these links: And fax them to GLANCDA at (562) 988-1460 or mail to: Southland Motor Car Dealers Association4201 Long Beach Blvd. #403 Long Beach, CA 9087 The Competition: Scope The Competition covers Engine Management, Vehicle Safety & Chassis/Body Electrical. It is designed to challenge the students by measuring: • Manual dexterity • Diagnostic disciplines • Problem solving and deductive reasoning capabilities • Performance with measuring tools, meters and other electronic devices • Abilities to follow wiring diagrams • Reading comprehension with charts and specs • Use of resources, i.e. – repair manual, torque wrench • Professional work habits and attention to detail Format There will be six stations – each designed to test the student’s knowledge and ability in one specific area. The teams will have 20 minutes to complete the tasks at each station -– a worksheet will be provided at each station and teams must complete the worksheet in order to receive credit for the station. Speed is not a factor in the scoring! Students will be scored on how well they worked together and the methods they used to solve each task presented to them. Credit will only be given for correct, complete answers, no partial credit. Scoring Each station will have a designated number of tasks or “bugs” for the students to solve. Each task or “bug” has a separate value, some may be worth more than others, but each station will be worth the same amount of points. At the end of the competition, each team’s scores from the six stations will be added up to get the team’s final score. Dates for the 2009 ATC Competition:
